Neha Arts' CHAL MERE BHAI tells the story of two brothers, Vicky (Sanjay Dutt) and Prem (Salman Khan), who fall in love with the same girl, Sapna (Karisma Kapoor). Vicky heads the business empire and is a committed and responsible man, while Prem is a happy-go-lucky youngster, who is inclined towards acting. Enters Sapna and Prem falls for her charms. Later Vicky too falls in love with her and the family decides to get them married. Vicky is unaware that Prem and Sapna are in love with each other, but when truth dawns upon him, he takes upon himself to get the lovers united.
The story is a mix of SAAJAN, HUM AAPKE HAIN KOUN, DILLAGI and PYAAR KOI KHEL NAHIN, wherein two brothers fall in love with the same girl. Since the plot has been witnessed earlier, little care has been taken to make the screenplay gripping or exciting. The film lacks the by-now-famous gags associated with David Dhawan films and the comedy scenes, barring a few, are not worth a mention.
The screenplay (Ikram Akhtar and Yunus Sajawal) does little to help elevate the proceedings. With a solid cast and a director who knows the pulse of the masses, the writers should've come up with gripping incidents to woo the masses. But both the first half and the second half are too routine in content and offer nothing original. Even the comedy scenes, which are so characteristic of David's films, seem to be conspicuously missing this time.
Another drawback of the film is the climax, which stands on a weak drama. The ease with which Sanjay hands over Karisma to Salman comes as a jolt to the viewer since he expects some fireworks. Even the songs and their placement are far from impressive. Barring 'Chori Chori Sapno Mein Aata Hai Koi', the remaining songs don't contribute to the plot at all. In fact, atleast two songs -- 'Meri Neend Jane Lagi Hai' and 'Chal Mere Bhai' -- have been placed without any relevance to the goings-on. Even action scenes look forced and weren't required at all.
Sanjay Dutt has been given a sober role, whereas Salman Khan plays straight to the gallery. Comparatively speaking, Salman's role being such, he will endear himself to the masses and will be appreciated for it. On the other hand, Sanjay Dutt is mediocre. Karisma Kapoor once again allows her acting potential to come to the fore. Naghma has no scope at all. Dalip Tahil is quite good. Sushma Seth is as usual. Shakti Kapoor makes his presence felt. Himani Shivpuri is okay. Sonali Bendre and Twinkle Khanna, in guest roles, don't create any excitement.
Director David Dhawan should've chosen a better script to work on. Those going to watch a typical David Dhawan kind of a masala film are bound to be disappointed this time. The film lacks in substance, which is its biggest flaw.
At the box-office, CHAL MERE BHAI has weak merits and will find the going tough.
