If there's a huge error behind "The Pink Panther 2" (other than the mistake of producing the sequel in the first place), it's pairing Steve Martin with John Cleese, then failing to capitalize on their potentially explosive verbal exchanges.

Anyone familiar with Cleese's outrageous accent as the taunting French knight in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" is in for a disappointment when he first opens his mouth as Chief Inspector Dreyfus and a crisp British voice tumbles out.

We never do learn why a Parisian police official would have a British accent. The backstory probably is one we'll never see on the DVD making-of featurette, that the filmmakers couldn't have a supporting player continually upstage their star.

Reprising the Peter Sellers role as France's supreme imbecile Inspector Clouseau, Martin again does nothing more than a passable parody of a French accent.

Cleese, taking over from Kevin Kline, who played Clouseau's long-suffering boss Dreyfus in 2006's "The Pink Panther," could have run blustery circles around Martin in the vocal department.

And who knows, it might have upped Martin's game to be challenged by another comedian with a finer ear and a throatier delivery.

Certainly, it could have left this wafer-thin crime romp with a lot more laughs.

Even so, the sequel is amusing in spots, with a few sight gags that border on inspired, particularly a segment in which the antics of Martin's Clouseau are captured on a variety of security videos at the mansion of a rich suspect (Jeremy Irons, who's just too good for such piffling material).

This time out, Clouseau is paired with an international "dream team" of detectives and experts (Andy Garcia, Alfred Molina, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Yuki Matsuzaki) to find "The Tornado," a legendary thief who has swiped the Shroud of Turin, the Magna Carta, the pope's ring and other treasures.

Tagging along are Clouseau's faithful partner (Jean Reno) and awkward love interest (Emily Mortimer) from the first movie, with some romantic hijinks involving Garcia and Rai Bachchan thrown in to spice things up.

Director Harald Zwart ("Agent Cody Banks"), working from a screenplay credited to Martin, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, assembles what amounts to 90 minutes of slapstick sketches, each trying to heighten the level of Clouseau's idiocy.

There are chuckles, maybe even a belly laugh or two if you're in a charitable mood. But the movie's mostly a waste of time and talent, including the reunion of Martin with "All of Me" co-star Lily Tomlin, who has a few pointless walk-ons as a police department coach on political correctness.

Sellers and Blake Edwards' original "Pink Panther" flicks could be hit and miss, but they had an overriding sense of sophistication and worldliness. Even though Martin's aiming for a family audience, his take on Clouseau at least could be something a shade above juvenile.

Hollywood funnyman Steve Martin returns to the role made famous by Peter Sellers in this high-concept sequel to the 2006 comedy hit The Pink Panther. The legendary Pink Panther Diamond is the latest to disappear, and Chief Inspector Dreyfus (John Cleese taking over acting duties from Kevin Kline) is assembling a team of international experts and detectives to track down the thief and recover the missing artifacts. The latest addition to the crack team is Inspector Jacques Clouseau (Martin), the intrepid yet awkward French detective who always seems to get his man. The basic problem in this film is that despite being a thriller, it's not racy enough to make you forget your popcorn and have you glued to the screen. In fact the narrative is uneven, mainly in the first half.

On a positive side though, "Toss" gets to the point right in the opening scene. The basic plot of five friends getting hold Rs.20 crore that originally belonged to criminals (Mahesh Manjrekar and Sushant Singh) is established well and you start believing that a roller coaster ride is about to begin.

Rajpal Yadav's entry and subsequent murder is done well but then the story starts drifting away.

A couple of nightmare sequences come one after another and it seems like a seen-it-before TV suspense drama. A Punjabi dance number only applies a speed breaker to the narrative. Not just that, the entire track featuring Rannvijay and his girlfriend Shruti Gera starts becoming repetitive after a point.

This is where Mahesh Manjrekar and Sushant Singh bring some spice to the proceedings. Along with their kid brother, they set out on a hunt for the missing booty that brings the film back on track. The cards start unfolding and with Zakir Hussain joining the scene, it becomes a three-way thriller that also takes the shape of a 'whodunit'.

What appeared to be a simple game turns out to be lethal with each of the five lead protagonists turning out to be different than what he/she was perceived to be. No one can be trusted anymore as dead bodies start piling up. The climax is decently done too though it comes at least 20 minutes after one would have imagined the film to have concluded. Also, it isn't one of those zany thrillers and remains dark throughout.

However, with the kind of subject and basic plotline in hand, writer-director Khatkar could have done much better. In fact even the choice of actors could have helped. Of the three leading ladies, the one who makes some impression is Aarti Chhabria. She plays the role of a conniving woman well.

Prashant Raj is in good form, especially in the second half. It's surprising he hasn't been seen in any film post his 'Jai' act in "Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag". Ashmit Patel does decently well while Rannvijay is relegated to being a side hero. Zakir Hussain entertains as a Goan cop.

On the flip side, the editing leaves a lot to be desired. It's not just patchy but also quite glaring in the first half of the film.

The best way to enjoy a completely unknown movie is to go with absolutely nil expectations. This is what helps a movie like "Toss", which comes literally unannounced.

Director Puneet Sira's 'Kissan' is more or less a remake of Manoj Kumar’s 1967 hit film 'Upkaar', set in a village the film is about two brothers Sohail and Arbaaz Khan, who look like movie stars inspite of one of them being a farmer.

In their youth while Arbaaz is sent to the city to study law, Sohail stays back home to till their land. The cliches arrive when two decades later the family faces a grave problem as their land is forced to be sold off to rich businessmen. Now making a movie about the plight of farmers is one thing, but turning it into a nonsensical violent B-movie is another.

The address has already been issued in Manoj Kumar's flick as well as in the brilliant 'Mother India', and Kissan completely misses the point. Apart from the dated plot, the film comprises of some pretty yawn inducing music. What more ridiculous is that the film depicts a village from Punjab as something straight out of a Steven Segal movie, complete with nasty guys killing people by the dozen, the farmers screaming for revenge after taking their pagdis off. Why make an over-the-top flick that portrays farmers as unintelligible human beings?

Barring newcomer Romeo who plays the villain, the performances in Kissan are shockingly bad, as none of the characters speak with proper Punjabi accents. The setting itself is strange, where everyone sings bhangra songs all the time in mustard fields. The supporting cast including Dia Mirza, Nauheed Cyrusi, Sarat Saxena and Dilip Tahil sleepwalk through their roles. Jackie Shroff is unintentionally funny once again as he tries very hard to 'act emotional'.

Desc:

Despite having delivered flops for a long time now, filmmaker N.Chandra is best remembered for his three films – the hard hitting Ankush and Pratighaat and of course the Ek Do Teen number film Tezaab which made Madhuri an overnight star. With his latest offering Y.M.I – Yeh Mera India, Chandra is back to his Ankush-Pratighaat form which made you stand up and notice the raw energy of his subjects.
Y.M.I like Oscar winner film, Crash peeks into the lives of a 12 people from diverse backgrounds and weaves together multiple stories which include racial discrimination, communal bias, immigrant issues, class and caste issues etc with all the events unfolding in a single day in the city of Mumbai where his characters are based.
What makes Y.M.I a winner are its terrific dialogues and Chandra’s handling of disturbing sequences with every single actor from the ensemble cast delivering an excellent performance. The manner in which Chandra has succeeded in connecting all the stories together is also laudable. Each single story connects with you and it is stuff that you can instantly relate to happening around you. The only issue however remains are their culminations. Chandra has tried to keep the ending happy rather than having a dark end which films tackling such subjects end up with. The length also could have been around two hours than going to almost two and a half hours.
Anupam Kher, Seema Biswas, Rajpal Yadav, Atul Kulkarni and Vijay Raaz are the most impressive of the lot. Rest all actors lend good support.
Do check out this film, if you are in mood for a high voltage drama experience. You wont regret your decision.
