Recall the cinema of 1970s. The villains would spray bullets at the hero, even throw bombs at him, but the hero would come out unscathed. The hero, in turn, would fire in the air, the bullet would hit the lamp post, bounce towards the villain and enter his skull. The hero was truly a superhero.

Welcome to the crazy, madcap world of QUICK GUN MURUGAN. In this film, the hero and villain are at loggerheads. The fight is between vegetarian and non-vegetarian [meals]. Here, the villain wants to make the best dosa in town and kidnaps women who have the perfect recipe for making delicious dosas.

QUICK GUN MURUGAN is not the stereotypical movie, but it borrows from all stereotypical movies that made Indian cinema so distinct from rest of the world. The best part is, QUICK GUN MURUGAN is innovative.

One sentence verdict? Try this dosa... it's delicious!

Quick Gun Murugun [Dr. Rajendra Prasad] is an unlikely superhero. He is a sincere South Indian cowboy who considers it his duty to serve and protect. The movie revolves around the misadventures of Quick Gun Murugun and his fight with his arch villain Rice Plate Reddy [Nasser].

Quick Gun Murugun enters into an epic battle that spans time and space, from a small South Indian village to Swarglok and then finally to the cosmopolitan Mumbai. He is torn between Mango Dolly [Rambha], who loves him and his first love Locket Girl [Anu Menon] and his loyalty is put to the test.

QUICK GUN MURUGAN depicts the war between good and evil and what makes it a novel experience is that the characters are straight out of 1970s. Director Shashanka Ghosh's choice of the subject as also the execution deserves credit.

But there's a hitch. There's too much Tamil in the film, which though explained by sub-titles, may prove a deterrent in non-Tamil areas. In fact, the South Indian appeal would restrict its penetration into the nook and corner of the country.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Nasser vie for top honours. Both excel. Rambha suits the role. Anu Menon is good. Raju Sundaram does a fine job. Vinay Pathak has a brief role. Ditto for Ranvir Shorey, Gaurav Kapur and Sandhya Mridul. Ashwin Mushran is first-rate. Kishori Balla [Anni] is perfect.

On the whole, QUICK GUN MURUGAN is an innovative experience. The adventures should appeal to the youth mainly.

Samir Karnik completes his trilogy. NANHE JAISALMER was about dreams, HEROES was about pride and VAADA RAHA is about hope. The commonality in all three films, besides Bobby Deol and child star Dwij Yadav, is the emotional quotient.

VAADA RAHA, inspired by a Russian fable, is about the bond between two patients - a grown up man and a kid, respectively. An interesting thought, nonetheless. But there's a hitch. The writing isn't too convincing and what actually dilutes the effort is that it tends to stagnate at places. More on that later!

What does stand tall in VAADA RAHA is Bobby Deol's super performance. This is his most accomplished work to date!

Duke's [Bobby Deol] life can be called gratifying. Professionally, he is a successful doctor, personally an ardent lover and parent to a doting dog. Duke loves Nalini [Kangna Ranaut] and they plan to marry soon.

A sudden turn of fate ends Duke's perfect world. He is paralyzed neck down, after an accident. Nalini leaves him. He becomes bitter and angry at himself. Duke hates his conditions so much that he wishes he had died instead of living in a condition which is worse. He loses hope.

Roshan [Dwij Yadav], a young boy, enters his life. Duke hates Roshan in the first few meetings, but Roshan wins over his heart. Roshan boosts his morale and motivates him. In time, Duke gains sensation first in his hands and then in his legs. One fine day, the doctor tries to make him walk with the help of crutches. But a shock awaits him.

Samir Karnik's forte has been emotions and VAADA RAHA displays his prowess yet again, but the writing bogs him down. For instance, Kangna walks out of Bobby - in fact deserts him - soon after he meets with an accident. Forget standing by him, she decides against visiting him in the hospital, which appears very, very strange. That seems hard to believe!

Another weird aspect is the culmination to the story, when Bobby is back on his toes and he's shown married to Kangna. Ideally, Bobby should've dumped Kangna for discarding him when he needed her the most.

Also, Dwij gives hope to Bobby all through, but the lines/dialogues he's asked to deliver look weird when a kid mouths them. For, Dwij talks like a wise old man who has seen the world.

Despite the faulty script, Samir Karnik's handling of a few sequences is commendable. Binod Pradhan's cinematography is top notch. Music is a letdown.

VAADA RAHA belongs to Bobby Deol. He's excellent. Kangna Ranaut is wasted. Dwij does very well. Mohnish Bahl is alright. Sharat Saxena and Vivek Shauq are wasted. Prateeksha Lonkar acts well.

On the whole, VAADA RAHA stands on a faulty script. Besides, the lack of hype will make the effort go unnoticed.

Till a few years ago, if a director or writer would tell you that the object of attention in his story is a pistol and how the entire film would revolve around it, you'd laugh, even scoff at, on his face. Is he out of his mind? But times have changed. Wacky concepts are the order of the day. Last week, QUICK GUN MURUGUN depicted one. This Friday, it's AAGEY SE RIGHT.

AAGEY SE RIGHT is witty and humorous in parts, but at the same time, the story is so fragile that it runs out of breath when stretched for 2 long hours.

Had debutante director Indrajit Nattoji concentrated on just two characters - the cop who loses his gun and the terrorist who loses his heart - instead of focussing on the assorted characters, this one would've been one helluva ride.

Final word? AAGEY SE RIGHT doesn't get it right.

AAGEY SE RIGHT tells the story of a cop [Shreyas Talpade] and terrorist [Kay Kay Menon]. Through a series of events not in their control, the cop loses his gun and the terrorist loses his heart. Their two worlds collide...

To start with, the screenplay doesn't do justice to the wild and imaginative story. In fact, the writing has loopholes aplenty. To cite an instance, Vjay Maurya is supposed to be the front man of the terrorists in Mumbai, but when Kay Kay has a change of heart, so does he. Strange, isn't it? Ditto for Shehnaz Treasurywala, who dances in a sleazy bar, is later visiting studios for film assignments and much later, also dances at the police function [in the finale]. Even Kay Kay's part suffers due to poor writing. His change of heart looks weird.

Barring Shreyas, Mahi Gill [television reporter] and Bharti Achrekar [Shreyas' mom], the characters are not well defined.

Director Indrajit Nattoji has a wacky sense of humour and it shows in the film, but he's been unsuccessful as far as the writing is concerned. The songs don't serve any purpose either.

Shreyas Talpade does a commendable job. In fact, his comic timing is impeccable. Kay Kay Menon is wasted. Vijay Maurya delivers a superior performance. Mahi Gill is perfect. Shehnaz Treasurywala can't act. Shiv Pandit irritates. Ditto for Shruti Seth. Rakesh Bedi is funny in a small role. Bharti Achrekar is excellent.

On the whole, AAGEY SE RIGHT has a few funny moments, but overall, this one doesn't go left or right, but directionless.

These two will do anything under the purview of the law or even beyond it, to get this criminal. And in order to succeed, they would need to involve a dreaded adversary of Baabarr called Tabrez (Sushant Singh). What follows is an edge-of-the-seat crime drama, packed with action, shot at realistic locations of Lucknow. The grungy look of the city’s by-lanes and skyline of UP add to the character of the film. This thrilling film is intricately layered and looks not only into the life of a criminal but attempts to peep into the concept of ‘crime’ and areas where crime is bred and nurtured. A parallel world that co-exists with ours, a world our society dreads, where corruption excels, which the politicians exploit and where the honest succumb.
